2. Road open, while no landings expected
Gibraltar airport is one of the most unique airports in the world simply due to its runway and main road intersection. The airport handles approximately 600,000 passengers per year and roughly 5,000 flights. Gibraltar is a British Overseas Terrority located right at the bottom of Spain and just above Morocco. Due to its extraordinary intersection and runway, the History Channel named Gibraltar airport as the worlds 5th most extreme airport. The intersection runway means that traffic in the small state temporarily pauses as aircraft’s land, giving main road users a first row view at aircraft’s landing. Another extreme part of Gibraltar airport is due to its geographical location, the airport is exposed to strong cross winds, making it exceptionally difficult for airports to comfortably land on it’s fairly small runway. Images show the extreme and rather uniqueness of the airport.
