Whether you’re an honest, law-abiding citizen or not, your country maybe be home to a large population of prisoners. There are a variety of reasons a country would list highly on a chart like this. Some of those factors are simply because they have a high population to begin with. Having a high population means statistically, you’re more likely to have a number of citizens who don’t not abide by the law. Another reason is environmental factors within the country. If the country is in depression or suffering from unemployment or government turmoil, it’ll usually mean the population are more likely to commit crime out of desperation. For example, countries suffering from civil wars, government issues, will often have protests and armed forces readily available to lock up trouble makers, without any further reason. Other factors that could affect a countries prison population is simply the types of laws and legislations a country has. For example, the freedom of carrying weapons in the US is a large contributor to the number of convicted felons, due to weapon related crimes.
